NEW ENGLAND LOBSTER ROLL FAQS
WHAT MAKES THIS A NEW ENGLAND STYLE LOBSTER ROLL?
When looking for recipes for lobster rolls, you've likely come across the debate of warm vs. cold. The most popular discussion is between the “Maine” Lobster Roll, prepared cold with mayonnaise, and the “Connecticut” style Lobster Roll, made warm with butter.
Our New England Lobster roll recipe is what is also commonly known as a “Maine” Lobster Roll.
WHAT TYPE OF BREAD SHOULD I USE FOR A LOBSTER ROLL?
In our opinion, the best lobster rolls in New England are served in a New England-style hot dog roll. These split-top buns are round at the top with flat sides and are perfect for loading up with your lobster meat. Grill them with a little bit of mayo or butter spread on the sides for some extra golden crisp.
WHAT ARE THE BEST SIDES FOR A LOBSTER ROLL?
There are lots of sides that pair perfectly with a mouthwatering New England lobster roll. Chips, french fries, and pickles are all classic sides that perfectly accent the lobster roll. You could also accompany your cold lobster roll with a chilled pasta salad or a simple garden salad if you want some more greens on your plate.
HOW SHOULD YOU COOK LOBSTER FOR A LOBSTER ROLL?
If you want fresh lobster for your roll, you are going to want to steam or boil it. Then, let it cool before shelling it. It's even easier when using cooked lobster meat. Simply tear the lobster meat into bite-size pieces and dress it up to go into the roll!
Or if you want a warm lobster roll, sauté your lobster chunks in butter.
HOW SHOULD YOU SEASON LOBSTER?
This New England-style lobster roll is super easy to make because it uses very simple seasonings that let the lobster shine. This seafood doesn't need a lot of seasoning because you want the sweet, succulent flavor of the lobster to come through. A little bit of salt, pepper, and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice will go a long way.
If you like things with a little spice, you can add some cayenne powder or even hot sauce. But you never want to overpower the flavor of fresh lobster!
HOW DO YOU SHELL A LOBSTER?
Shelling a lobster can feel intimidating. While you can find plenty of tutorials online, here are some easy steps to follow (all you need is your hands and the help of a nut cracker):
Gently twist the tail of the lobster
Make one or two cracks in the tail shell with a nut cracker
Pull out the lobster tail meat
Gently twist off the lobster claws at the knuckle
Make one or two cracks in the claw and the knuckle with a nut cracker
Pull out the meat from the claw and knuckle
Patience is key when shelling a lobster. You will also want to be careful with the pointy bits on the lobster's knuckles.
We recommend using a mix of claw and knuckle meat for this New England lobster roll recipe because it's the most tender and sweet. Of course, if you do cook an entire lobster you should never let the rest go to waste! Use the lobster tail meat in a lobster salad or lobster mac and cheese.
With North Coast Seafoods Frozen Lobster Meat you don't have to worry about shelling a lobster at all!
