Both lobster roll styles are beloved across New England. You can find both styles in nearly any state, sometimes even in the same restaurant!

While there’s no formal regional sales dataset, seafood experts believe there's a clear favorite. At a Boston oyster bar, about 60% of lobster roll orders in summer are for Connecticut-style lobster rolls. That figure increased to 95% in winter!

Overall, hot lobster rolls outsell cold lobster rolls by a ratio of approximately 3 to 1.

Can you use frozen lobster meat for lobster rolls?

Yes, you can absolutely use frozen lobster meat for lobster rolls! Frozen lobster meat, especially claw and knuckle meat, offers a convenient option without sacrificing flavor or texture. Just make sure to properly thaw it before use to ensure the best result.

What’s the best bread for lobster rolls?

The classic choice for a lobster roll is a New England–style split-top hot dog bun. These buns are flat on the sides, making them perfect for buttering and toasting. Their soft texture and mild flavor let the lobster shine, while the toasted sides add just the right amount crunch.

If you can’t find split-top buns, brioche hot dog buns or soft rolls are a great alternative. Some people prefer a heartier bun for buttery Connecticut-style lobster rolls.
